Law & Jesus

The Law & Jesus

2 Corinthians 3:3 – 11

The Law was written on stone but the new covenant is written in our hearts. The Law brought death and condemnation. The Law came from God so it is holy and glorious. The Law was temporary, but the covenant with Jesus is everlasting. The Law could not forgive sins, give eternal life or make humans good. It brought condemnation, death and the knowledge of sin. The Law did not give the power to do what they are supposed to do. So, what did God do about this?

Titus 3:5 – 7

Works cannot save us from the Law. The only thing that can save us from condemnation is mercy through the washing and regeneration of the Holy Spirit via God. Jesus Christ is our sacrifice. Through our faith in Jesus was are justified. Through the Holy Spirit we are now able to do what is right. Through His mercy we were saved; we were justified through grace and became heirs of eternal life. How does the Holy Spirit regenerate us?

Ezekiel 36: 25 – 27

We are given a new heart. A heart of stone is hard and self-willed. A heart of flesh is pliable and want to please God. The Holy Spirit is who does this change. He won’t change someone’s heart is they don’t ask for it. The sprinkling of blood was symbolized in the Mosaic Law of purification. After seven days the unclean person who received sprinkled blood of the red heifer in Numbers 19. Through the Holy Spirit we are now able to obey God and follow Him. A sacrifice was needed for repentance, blood was needed.

Hebrews 9: 15 – 22

A covenant is a will. So like a will, a covenant comes into effect only after death. Hence Jesus had to shed his blood to “activate” the new covenant. Not all things are purified with blood. Others are fire and water. We are baptized with Fire and the Holy Spirit; washed/cleaned with the word(water). Jesus fulfilled the entire Law and the ways ones becomes purified.
