The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction,
and concern for instruction is love of her,
and love of her is the keeping of her laws,
and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality,
and immortality brings one near to God;
so the desire for wisdom leads to a kingdom.
– The Book of Wisdom 6:17-20
The Book of Wisdom is one of the seven deuterocanonical books not found in most bibles. Though some early church fathers considered Wisdom inspired and included it in certain early Christian manuscripts, it was not universally accepted into the Hebrew canon. Nevertheless, The Book of Wisdom contains powerful insight concerning wisdom and righteousness.
The writer of Wisdom provides us with a roadmap starting with wisdom and ending with the Kingdom of God. Those who seek God must first seek wisdom. While it’s possible to possess worldly wisdom without being near to God, having godly wisdom requires the Lord.
Wisdom is depicted as a female in The Book of Wisdom as well as Proverbs. In both books, wisdom is shown to be something we should be striving to find. We read in 1 Kings chapter 3 that YAHWEH agreed to give King Solomon anything he asked for. King Solomon didn’t ask for wealth, land or the destruction of his enemies; he asked YAHWEH for wisdom. King Solomon had a desire to rule his people better, and so wisdom was the answer. Those who already believe they have enough knowledge and experience for any situation will never know true wisdom. They rely on themselves and their own understanding. True wisdom comes from Ruach YAHWEH.
We read in Isaiah 11:2 of a prophesy of the coming messiah. The Rauch YAHWEH is said to be upon Him, “a spirit of wisdom and understanding”. In Exodus 31:3 and 35:30-31 the Ruach Elohim (the Spirit of God) gave Uri wisdom and understanding. There are many examples of the Spirit of God or Spirit of YAHWEH coming to someone to provide them with godly wisdom. Even the Twelve understood that wisdom was a Spirit or gift from God in Acts 6:3.
Let us realize that the wisdom the world provides will profit us nothing; for we will all return to dust whence we came. Godly wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Pray that Ruach Qodesh (the Holy Spirit) grants you the wisdom of God in order to obtain the goal of our faith; the salvation of your soul. Wisdom is not a trophy for the learned—it is a lamp for the humble. It does not shout from ivory towers but whispers to those who kneel (1 Kings 19:11-13).
