But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.
Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.
– Matthew 6:33,34
Jesus is preaching on the Mount to whoever will listen. He covered a plethora of topics and lessons from judging others to how to pray.
It is only natural for humans to worry or be concerned about situations beyond their control.
This isn’t to say to smooching off others when you’re able to care for yourself is an acceptable lifestyle.
Jesus is saying that to focus on material objects, will keep one from drawing close to God. Having goals and aspirations are a great thing,
but having that single mindset will keep one from achieving true happiness.
True happiness can only be found in Jesus. One can search their whole life for ways to fill their lacking happiness and not be successful.
Paul writes in Romans 14:17 that the kingdom of God is not a matter of food or drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the holy Spirit.
Paul basically reiterates what Jesus had said. This life is fleeting; lasting but a short period of time. Worrying about such temporal issues does
nothing positive. Instead of worrying about something, choose to do something about it or give the problem to God.
Americans especially tend to worry about things beyond their control. We also want instant gratification.
Something as trivial as waiting in line at the grocery store can cause people irritation. In this fast-paced life we live in,
worries and anxieties can snowball. Instead of placing all our hopes and desires in this world for the short time we’re here, plan for life after.
Jesus gives many examples of what the kingdom of God is like and how to enter it. No one can purchase their way in, or sneak in.
Worldly possessions mean nothing after this life.
Seeking the kingdom of God, one will find their worries and problems are not worth the stress.
Coming to Jesus and giving him our worries, will bring about a sense of peace. A peace that can only come from God. Jesus said it best when he said,
“Who among you by worrying can add a single moment to your life-span?” (Matthew 6:27).
Do not worry, be at peace, and experience the joy from knowing Jesus.
